The tragedy of trademe

"Wine is bottled poetry" reads the inscription, a quote apparently taken from Robert Louis Stevenson, scottish author. RLS probably had a great appreciation for art, and is no doubt rolling in his grave at this very time.

By Wellington Artist D.Andrews
Merlot...A mixed media piece featuring raised 'borders' as a textural feature, abstract pictures of merlot grapes, and a glass of merlot. A printed panel of a French engraving showing a young woman at the grape harvest.

Mixed Media: modelling compound, printed paper, pastel, acrylic paint. Finished with a protecive sealant.

This is a truly awful piece (as is almost all art that comes out of wellington) with 8 hours left, 31 bids it's going for $91. But you could probably buy it now for a cool $100. As the say on trademe: 'The photo here does not do the colours justice, look at my other listings!'

Art has always been a subjective process with a subjective audience. What is good art, what is bad? Van Gogh never had much luck selling his art before he died. Compared to Van Gogh's unsuccessful life as a painter, this artist is doing pretty well indeed! Your opinions are as unimportant or as important as anyone elses when it comes to art and its appreciation, but I wonder, did you seek permission from this particular artist (in fact all of the artist's whose work you have cut and pasted) before you stuck it on your site? Now that is fairly cut and dry - hope you're not breaking any laws....

Debs, we all have psuedonyms here, if someone wants to sue us, good fucking luck. And also, Who gives a shit? It's still showing their art to the entire world. We print the artists names (or pseudonym) and if someone comes here and sees it, they're welcome to go to trademe.co.nz and put a bid on the work. We understand that our opinions are important AND unimportant, and the most important thing to us is to have fun, and make ourselves laugh. Generating discussion about what is and what isn't art is also important. But not as important as having a laugh. What do you think of the work of that great master Max Gimblet, Debs? Been to any of his shows? I notice you haven't commented on that review. "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like" is the standard issue phrase that runs through my mind when I look at art, and being a fairly cynical and shallow prick, I find it a lot easier and funnier to write about art I think is terrible.

smarkarts, you hit the nail on the head.

I think you'll find that under the terms of 'fair use', most work can be copied for the purposes of comment, criticism, news reporting or parody, but not for financial gain.
Admittedly this is an American law, but the internet is a world-wide public domain, so I guess when it comes to New Zealand its everyone for themselves and no legs to stand on.
Its true that many famous artists faced harsh criticism from the public while they were alive. It may be that by criticising the trade-me artists, we are helping them on their own paths to greatness. That would be nice, wouldn't it?

Perhaps I shall continue to lurk in that dark alley...But what if I actually like your work and had positive things to say (unlikely I'll admit) and heeding your advice-don't review it? I should think that THAT could also be disheartening.

P.S. I was once an artist myself, but I lost my flare and faith. So I took the face of a bitter art "reviewer".

hey scuzzball, I am the mother of one of the emerging artists!!! and I can tell you you don't want to bump into me after the tears and anguish you caused )*&^#$$!!!

I do find your words hillarious in a way, but not so funny for someone who is fairly new to selling their work and growing up.

Maybe you need to give the occasional good review to redeem yourself - sleep well with the thought of the pain you have caused a young sensitve artist.
